Interview with Paul Field, Managing Director of Wirtgen Limited

Why is Hillhead important for you?

Paul Field: “It is an exhibition that is perfectly in line with our Wirtgen Group products, i.e. Quarrying and Road Construction equipment”.

How is business for Wirtgen Limited?

Paul Field: “Wirtgen Ltd. has seen an upturn in business in the UK producing better than expected results in the first 6 months of 2010. Following the recent downturn, Wirtgen Ltd. find themselves with increased market shares across the range. Strategies from Wirtgen Ltd. include a major push into the contractors recycling market with our new Kleemann MC 110 Z crusher which will be exhibited at Hillhead. The Hamm market share is growing, particularly with the major rental companies and this will grow with the launch of the new compact range of small tandem rollers and the new HD+ range of heavy tandem rollers. Both models will be shown at Hillhead. The new Wirtgen W 210 will also be exhibited and this machine has become the preferred 2 m planer with exceptional sales in the UK since its launch in January 2010. The Vogele 1803-2 is now the market leading paver in its class and this unit will also be shown at Hillhead. Fuel economies across our range of equipment is a major factor in our sales successes, particularly with the Wirtgen W 210 planer and the Kleemann MC 110 Z crusher”.

How is business at your sales and service branch Wirtgen Ireland?

Paul Field: “Wirtgen Ireland is still suffering with the severe downturn in the Irish economy, however, results are better than expected. Whilst cost controls had to be implemented in line with all companies in Ireland, Wirtgen Ireland have been determined to maintain a high level of customer service and representation from their new operating centre in Co. Meath. Vogele, Hamm and Wirtgen are all market leaders in Ireland with increasing market shares. Recycling and stabilisation are growing markets in Ireland and Wirtgen Ireland are at the forefront of this technology supplying a range of recyclers, towed stabilisers and spreaders for this market”.

Will you also have special customer service offers for the show?

Paul Field: “Service and parts are a major focus for both the UK and Ireland. A representation of our service and parts capabilities will be displayed with specialists on hand. A special parts promotion will run during the show”.

How is the development of your fourth brand Kleemann?

Paul Field: “We are showing our new MC 110 Z jaw crusher which is aimed at the contractors crusher market. This is a market we intend to major on and demonstrations for this have commenced. Wirtgen Ltd. have expanded their sales force to specialise in this area and results to date are highly encouraging. Build quality, high production, smooth operation and particularly low fuel usage are the key points that are attracting interest from recycling specialists”.

What was your personal customer feedback after the difficult years of 2008 and 2009?

Paul Field: “Customers are appreciative that both Wirtgen Ltd. and Wirtgen Ireland have maintained a long term strategy and have not been tempted to slash customer back up to save costs. More than ever our customers need a partner they can depend on long term and that is our strategy going forward – facilitated by the fact that we are privately owned and specialists in our chosen field”.
